"Ernie graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1961 and attended NC State University, majoring in Civil Engineering. He enlisted in the US Army in 1964 and became a First Lieutenant forward observer with the Recondo Platoon of the 101st Airborne Division - the most highly decorated fighting unit in Vietnam. During his enlistment, he graduated from Officer’s Candidate School, Airborne School, Ranger School and the Jungle Warfare School. He was highly decorated for bravery in action and for wounds received during his service to our country. After being discharged from the Army, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Business School at The University of North Carolina where he now serves as a "Ram Rep".

After graduation, he worked in banking and real estate sales. Ernie began his building career in 1973 and has been actively involved in the construction industry in five states performing market studies, planning, developing, building and marketing residential, multifamily and commercial properties. He began Signature Communities Inc. in 1996 to develop starter home communities. He holds licenses as a North Carolina Real Estate Broker and as a General Contractor.

Ernie is an Eagle Scout, has been a member of the Rocky Mount City Council, the Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Rocky Mount, and served on numerous committees locally, statewide and nationally in service to his community and to the building industry. He was named "The Builder of the Year" in Rocky Mount."
